Worst copywriting advice ever?
“Start at the beginning… and when you come to the end, stop.”
The truth is: if you’re sitting down to write sales copy, following the Mad Hatter’s advice will keep you STUCK.
When you’re writing sales copy, the first thing your reader needs to see is a juicy, hooky headline – something that grabs their attention and keeps them from navigating away from your ad, squeeze page, or sales page. You only have a few milliseconds to grab their attention – remember, humans now have a shorter attention span than a goldfish – so it’s got to be AMAZING!
NO PRESSURE.
If you’re like me, coming up with a juicy headline off the top of your head while staring at a blank page can be HARD.
Here’s an easier way:
Start in the middle.
✨Writing an ad or a squeeze page? Start with the “you’ll learn…” bullet points.
✨Writing a sales page? Start with your offer announcement and “you’ll come away with…” bullet points.
When you start in the middle, you not only get the easy part onto the page (no more blank screen and blinking cursor)…
You also get crystal clear on the BENEFITS your offer will bring to your buyers. And those benefits provide a framework that gets your mental wheels turning and guides the rest of your copy.
Give this a try on your next piece of sales copy and let me know how it goes!
